Have you ever looked up at the night sky, especially out in the country away from the lights of the big city, to see the wonders of the Milky Way Galaxy? It’s stunningly beautiful. Just look at a spot, one spot, intently for a long time. It takes anywhere from 10-20 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to the lack of light.
As far as you can look, you only see a fraction of the stars in any one spot. There are about 200 billion stars in the Milky Way Galaxy, and there are about as many galaxies in the universe. No, we don’t understand that. We have no frame of reference for that.
There are basically two ways to look at the world around us. The first worldview is Naturalism: the belief that all there ever has been or ever will be is the material world. All of time and space is the only real thing. It has become more difficult to logically believe this theory with the increasingly sure beginning of everything (time, space, matter, energy etc.) in what is called the “Big Bang.”
The Christian faith claims that there was a start to everything and their founder was there! This is the second worldview, theism. There is more to the universe than the physical world that God created.
Whether we believe it was in an instant, over a week, a few thousand years, or 13.8 billion years ago, God is the one who created, and He continues to sustain EVERYTHING. Without God, we are just a random act in a vast (understatement) universe essentially devoid of life except for this one fraction of a fraction of the possibility to survive in planet earth, at this time, in our place.
God created everything that there is, and he did it so that He might receive worship. When we pray, when we sing to the Lord, when we gather together with fellow Believers in corporate groups to honor Jesus, we are doing what we were meant to do. We are worshipers; it is what we were made for.
I remember going into the back room at Dallas Mustang Parts when I was a kid and looking at all the Shelby Mustangs in there. I remember thinking “wow” but then being sad when I realized these racecars, from a time when raw power won races, never left the showroom floor. They were racecars; they could still blow the doors off the Corvettes and GTOs of that era, but they weren’t doing what they were meant to do.
We must strive not be like that those cars. We must get out there and sing to God! Sing with our voice, sing with our heart, sing with our love for others, and sing for God’s glory! Join in the chorus of all creation, the sun, moon, and stars: HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD!
Memory Verse:
” The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
– Psalm 19:1 (NIV)
Prayer Prompt:
“Oh great God, who made heaven and earth, thank You for creating me to worship You, and help me remember to be who You are making me to be…”
