At this moment I’m doing a one of my favorite Bible studies by Beth Moore, Believing God. This week we are studying about our heritage and what that means to those around us. The definition for heritage means something that is passed down from proceeding generations, like traditions. I don’t know about you, but there are some things in my life that I do not want to pass down to my children: my temper, my stubbornness, my teenage rebellion. Yikes!
The thought of passing those down to my children scares me to death. But there is hope! I can start a new heritage for my family, and so can you. I have special traditions that I would like to pass down to my children. I already see little things that they do, such as journaling and writing/highlighting in their Bibles, that they learned from me.
I see them becoming givers and encouragers, much like how my grandmother was in her life. She was a remarkable woman. She loved the Lord and gave so much of herself to others, and I remember her Bible being full of prayer requests and answered prayers. I’m not sure where her Bible is today, but I would love to see it again and pass it down to my children.
My grandmother left a heritage of faith, encouragement, love and forgiveness. I didn’t see it at the time, but now I do. I see what she left me and in return I’m passing it down to my children. My prayer is that when I go home to be with God, that my children and grandchildren can look at my life and my Bible and see all my highlights and written prayers and know that God is good and faithful.
Memory Verse:
“‘You are my witnesses,’ declares the Lord, ‘and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me.’”
– Isaiah 43:10 (NIV)
Prayer Prompt:
“Lord, today help me create a godly heritage for my children and their children. I don’t want them to come to me and ask why I did not tell them about Your love and faith-fullness. I want them to see You through me. Let me start creating my heritage by…”
