Hands clutching a mug of sweet coffee, I pinch my eyes closed to hear the sound of the ocean in tree leaves. Wind sways them like waves. I open my eyes to return to the reality of neighbours, concrete and hydro lines. Far above it all, wind pushes thick layers of grey cloud toward the single patch of blue sky. Hunched over a plastic bowl, she carefully eyes mini chocolate chips as she eats. Finally, she has it all to herself; big brother has finished his portion. He soon joins her at the coffee table to read a story, possibly to her. He tweets and twitters, unaware of sister’s rising suspicion. “Are you afraid of losing yourself in motherhood?” she asks as I cry. I nod. “Who are you?” she asks. Tears stream down my face as I search for an answer. I have no answer.
