Hands clutching a mug of sweet coffee, I pinch my eyes closed to hear the sound of the ocean in tree leaves. Wind sways them like waves. I open my eyes to return to the reality of neighbours, concrete and hydro lines. Far above it all, wind pushes thick layers of grey cloud toward the single patch of blue sky. I consider how it must look above the clouds –sunny, clear sky, a perfect day. The patch of blue shrinks and is swallowed by a sky of grey. The Tree on the Rock
It caught my eye immediately, high on a rock-hewn mountainside in West Virginia. The lone pine tree towered over jagged stair-steps of granite, a startling sliver of green among dull grays and browns. We were heading home after a week-long stay in Pennsylvania, tired but grateful for the fun vacation with our family. I-77 snaked through towering mountain peaks, along vast, tree-filled ravines, and over bridges so high I wasn’t sure if they covered land or water.
