“Are you afraid of losing yourself in motherhood?” she asks as I cry. I nod. “Who are you?” she asks. Tears stream down my face as I search for an answer. I have no answer. The question rolls around in my head for days. Who am I? What is identity? I know what I do. I know my relationship to other people. I know my spiritual gifts. I know my personality. So who am I? Who does God say I am? I am righteous through Christ, redeemed, secure, filled with the Holy Spirit, blameless in God’s sight and saved. I have access to the Fruits of the Spirit (patience, love, and kindness), boldness and ... Read the Post
The Pushups
When people know I’m a Christian, they forward feel good stories about God’s love. I’m sure you know exactly what I’m talking about. These stories are heartwarming and even bring tears to the eyes, but they only tell partial truth. One day I received one such email. It was about a college professor who attempted to put into cultural context the sacrifice Jesus made for us. I don’t remember all the details, but I do remember the professor brought in donuts for his lecture class. He offered a donut to each student. If they accepted, he told them the catch. They would have to do 100 pushups ... Read the Post
Heavenly Smiles
When I am holding my baby daughter, she gives everyone heavenly smiles. She is in my arms, and she feels the freedom to spread her sweetness to each new face that she sees. Her smiles melt the hearts of the passersby, and they always comment on how beautiful and sweet natured she is. However, when my daughter leaves my arms, her sweetness completely disappears. When someone else is holding her, she frowns and cries and lets the whole world know her displeasure. She has no more heavenly smiles to share and no more sweetness to pass out. She is completely miserable and makes those around her ... Read the Post
I'm Pregnant with…SETH
Humans are made of three things: spirit, soul and body. The spirit has five faculties: hope, faith, reverence, prayer and worship. There are two types of hope: human and divine. Humanity is carnal, sinful in nature. Therefore, it is imperfect. Human hope common to all human societies is optimistic desire. There is no guarantee with human hope. Now Divine hope is optimistic assurance. This type of hope is our guarantee. Praise God for an assurance with life in relationship in Him. In the Old Testament language, Hebrew, SETH means compensation. Seth was the son born to Adam and Eve after Cain ... Read the Post
Got a Hammer?
With dirty dishes in the sink, baby food stains on my clothes, play dough stuck in the carpet, meat trying to desperately defrost ten minutes before dinner, and hair in a messy pony tail, I tend to lose perspective. Suddenly, my husband goes from the love of my life to a lazy, never around dud as fast as Clark Kent changes into Superman. This is the attitude that hits my husband like a Mac truck as soon as he walks in the door after a long hard day at work. It is no surprise that a fight too ridiculous to even admit to ensues. We then spend the evening having a quiet dinner and watching TV ... Read the Post
I’m Not Job
Recently my friend and I had a conversation about abundance. I'm in a space where my faith is wavering due to my 13 month unemployment status and my perpetual left sided handicap due to stroke. It's difficult for me to see from where the abundance is coming because I'm in the middle of my trial. My friend asked me a simple question that I can't get out of my mind. The question was, “Don't you think that God is big enough to deliver you from unemployment and back to complete health into the abundance of His promise?” Well, I didn't answer him in the moment, but I'll answer now. I was taught ... Read the Post
