Today I started the Daniel Diet – a promise to myself and God that I will drink only water and eat only fruits and vegetables for the next ten days. This is my attempt to detox my body (God’s temple) of harmful toxins in my system – a result of indulging in too many of my favorite foods, munchies and sweets.
After talking it over, my family decided to pursue the Daniel Diet together, knowing it will mean significant changes in our meals and eating habits. We can only have fruits and vegetables for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks – along with lots of water. No raisin bread, oatmeal, cereal, waffles, eggs or bacon in the morning. No rice, pasta or meat with lunch or dinner.
I was a little surprised to realize just how much processed food was in my panty. The tall Old Navy shopping bag I pulled from the closet is now filled with foods we’ve promised ourselves not to eat during our detox. The cold cans of French Vanilla Slim Fast will sit on the shelf in my fridge for ten days. The lunchmeat, cheese, milk and eggs have been given away along with the bread and chips.
During my purging of the “no-no’s” and inventory of fruits and vegetables on hand, I felt God asking me to consider what changes I need to make in my life to improve my spiritual walk with him. In my heart I know that it’s time for some honest self-examination and spiritual regrouping, so I’m praying that God will purify my heart along with my body during these ten days.
And when I begin adding other foods in my shopping cart in the future, I hope I’ll be more conscious of what I serve on my table as well as how I nurture my heart.
Memory Verse:
“Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”
– 3 John: 1:2 (NIV)
Prayer Prompt:
“God, You have provided so abundantly for us. You created all that is good and necessary for us to have a healthy heart, mind and soul. I pray that You remove the temptations which prevent me from living healthy, both physically and spiritually. Help me start by…”
