Can You Hear God?

My 5 year old son asked me after we came home from church last week, “Mommy, how do we know God is talking to us if we can’t hear him?”

This seemed to him and to me a fair question to ask. I had to think about how I would answer him. I laughed first at how cute he was and then said, “Well, you just have to be real quiet and listen to your heart where God speaks to us the most.”

He and I have been very committed to our new relationship with God and our church. I am proud of his question, even if it is not quite on the right track. I asked him if he understood what I meant, and he said, “Yes, Mommy.”

He then went on to tell me how he loves church. “It’s fun right, Mom,” he said.

“Yes, Buddy, church is great!” I said.

It’s nice when our children in all their innocence remind us of what others can’t see, or hear in this case. We can hear God. He is there to heal us when we need Him and guide us when we are lost. We just have to listen. I am sure children aren’t the only ones who wonder if God is really there. I’m glad to know He is.

“Dear, God, please help me to always hear Your Words and always be ready to listen. Thank You for the innocent questions of my children. They remind me that You are always with us….”
