I love to read! I know many people who share my passion – reading is such a wonderful way to learn new information, provide entertainment, and is one of my absolute favorite things to do. I have read Christian books to help me grow spiritually, motivational books for personal development, medical books to develop professionally, fiction books as an escape, and everything in between!
Some of the books that I have read over the years have left such a strong impression on me that I feel forever connected to the author. However, I will say that if I were on a deserted island and could bring only one book, it would be the Bible. What other answer would one expect from a Christian? I love to read the Bible; and when I devote time to reading God’s Word, my mood is uplifted and my day invariably goes better.
Although I enjoy my Bible, I admit that I don’t read it enough. I devote pitifully too little time to the most important God- inspired book. I know that the Bible is truly a Living Book, and that it has the power to transform me closer to the image of Christ. After all, as a Christ-follower, this is truly the only reading guide I should ever need.
When I think of the thousands of hours spent reading in my life, the only reading that actually counted was that done in the Bible. Don’t get me wrong; there are some powerfully awesome Christian books out there that illuminate Biblical principals in ways many of us may not see for ourselves. But I can’t help but think that God doesn’t want me to receive His Word second-hand only.
I need to go straight to the source! I have lately made a commitment to spend considerably more time reading God’s word than reading man’s word. To do anything less would be cheating myself out of the richness of a full and intimate relationship with my Savior.
Memory Verse:
“For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joint and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
-Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)
Prayer Prompt:
“Father, thank You for thinking so much of me to give me the Bible. I know that it is truly Your Word, and an instruction manual for my life. Forgive me for not living the full Christian life You want for me; help me to devote the best part of the day to your reading word. Show me how I can clear my busy schedule to spend time in Your Word by…”
