As a new year comes in, we often make a long list of things we want to change -- lose weight, exercise more, spend less money, read the Bible more, be a better person --- and the lists keep going and going. Last week at Youth Alive, we watched a small snippet of a skit by the Skit Guys about the New Year and the last line was “This year stop listing and start living.” So over the last few days I’ve been thinking about the New Year. This morning I was studying my Sunday school lesson and it was about the consequences Rehoboam (Solomon’s son) faced because he didn’t make wise ... Read the Post
Brain Candy vs. Spiritual Meat
They say you are what you eat. My teeth bear witness to that. Yesterday I bit down on a tootsie roll sucker and a sharp pain radiated through my jaw. Thirty-some years’ worth of candy eating has taken a toll, resulting in numerous fillings and a few unpleasant and very expensive root canals. And all those tasty, double cheese crackers that go down so easily? They’ve left me sluggish and wanting more. Sweets and carbs, although temporarily satisfying, actually make us hungrier. They spike our blood sugar, resulting in an extra dose of insulin, only to leave us craving more. When our ... Read the Post
The Weaver
Do you feel Halloween sneaking up? I do! So, I’ve got a spider web story to share. One morning years ago, as my sons and I we were rushing off into our day, we noticed a HUGE spider web – all perfect and symmetrical – hanging right in front of their bedroom window. I suppose we noticed it because the light had captured the early morning dew glistening off of it. It was amazing! When we returned back home, early in the afternoon, the web was gone! Huh… Well, knowing how flimsy webs are, I thought of half a dozen reasons why the web had vanished. We felt a little sad, because it truly had ... Read the Post
My Emmaus Journey
Let’s face it, we all go on countless journeys and life takes us along many a winding turns and narrow streets. But, how many of us have taken a spiritual trip along the “Road to Emmaus” just like those two disciples did long time ago? I had the opportunity of travelling on mine a few months ago when I embarked on an Evangelisation Course at our church. It all began on a cool Saturday afternoon. However, the setting was nothing like the rocky road that those disciples travelled. Our journey took place on the church grounds. We students were grouped together and each one had to choose a ... What Will She Choose
Two long weeks had passed since the incident took place that seemed to shake the foundation of her faith. She had replayed it time and again in both her heart and mind. Thoughts of betrayal, fear and doubt had almost become second nature during these two weeks. Had she indeed heard and obeyed what she thought were instructions from the Lord? If so, why had it become as soot and ashes so quickly in her eyes severing no purpose? Once again she glanced at the clock, past midnight. Sleep seemed to be unattainable tonight. She cried out, “Why, Lord, can’t I simply put these thoughts out of my ... Read the Post
No Doubt About It
Back in October of 2009, God began stretching me in a particular area. I felt that He was asking me to take a huge step of faith. There were moments when I found myself doubting I could do what I felt God was leading me to do. I questioned God by asking Him, “I’ve already got so much on my plate. Are You sure about this timing?” I thought, “How in the world could I accomplish what He’s calling me to do?” The answer to that question was simple: I couldn’t; at least not on my own. However, God could accomplish those things through me. I took the step of faith and God was faithful to enable ... Read the Post
